UK one-fifth of the way to completing smart meter rollout

10 million smart meters are now in operation across homes and businesses in the UK, but number still well short of estimated 52 million target by 2020
The UK has just two years to install an estimated 42 million smart meters in homes and businesses across the country, after official statistics today revealed the government is still well behind on meeting its 2020 target.
At the end of last year there were 10 million smart meters up and running, marking a 71 per cent increase on December 2016 levels. That figure, however, is still well short of the estimated 52 million units experts believe need installing to meet the government’s pledge of offering a smart meter to every home and business in the country by the end of 2020.
